What Is A Mouth Yeast Infection?

Commonly referred to as Thrush, a mouth yeast infection can naturally cause some major concerns. While this is most commonly occurring in children and infants, adults can also acquire the infection. If you are unfortunate enough to either have your child or yourself experience this, you need to understand it fully and get rid of it as quickly as possible.

First and foremost, you need to understand the causes of the disease. There are naturally occurring fungi that are present in the mouth. These are normally controlled by other naturally occurring bacteria and microorganisms. When that balance is upset, the result is an oral yeast infection.

Things such as stress, medications, and diabetes are likely causes in adults. Suffering from dry mouth is also a major cause as it dries out the mouth making it more susceptible to bacteria. Smokers or improperly fitting dentures put people in unnecessary danger of contacting this. Also, HIV suffers are more likely to experience this issue that others. Children can also pass this disease to their mothers during breast feeding.

If you think you are in danger of having a mouth yeast infection, look for the following: lesions in your mouth, usually on your tongue or inner cheek but they can also be located on the roof of your mouth. These lesions will have a creamy white substance in them, commonly compared to a cottage cheese look and may bleed upon touching them or brushing your teeth.

If you are suffering from this, you should immediately see your doctor who will more than likely prescribe antifungal medications. Your dentist is also a choice as they are very familiar with this infection and usually have treatment programs in place based on how you contacted the disease and what your age is. More importantly, you want to try to prevent this disease and here’s how.

The most important preventive care for mouth yeast infection is good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth is the number one step you can take. You also want to make sure you visit your dentist regularly. We are all scared of that chair but it can save us from this horrible disease. Finally, stop smoking. It’s a habit and hard to quit but there are plenty of aids out there to help you and get your family to support you. There is no need to put yourself in harms way when it can be prevented.
