Understanding Male Yeast Infection

Male yeast infection is a rare case, especially in genital yeast infections. However, individuals with weakened immune systems may also suffer from symptoms of oral and genital yeast infections through sexual contact with an infected partner.

Oral yeast infection

Oral yeast infection or thrush is caused by an increase of fungus population in the human body. Any healthy human body, regardless of gender, has balanced populations of flora or good bacteria and fungi. However, when an imbalance of natural parasites occurs in our bodies this flora becomes intrusive and causes infections.

Oral thrush may range in severity, the mildest cases being harmless growth of white patches on the tongue and soft palate. Serious oral thrush, however, may be painful, resembling lesions in the skin tissue caused by mouth ulcers.

Genital yeast infection

Genital male yeast infection appears as red rashes on the tip of the penis with or without a whitish/grayish discharge that looks like milk curdle. Most infected patients suffer from itching in the genitals and soreness. Infected individuals also suffer from discomfort during intercourse and urination.

Systematic yeast infection

Systematic yeast infection occurs in both males and females when their immune systems have been weakened. This is common in individuals suffering from HIV, STDs, AIDS, and leukemia.

Treatments

Yeast infection can be treated with prescribed oral medication (Nystatin syrup or tablets), over-the-counter anti-fungal topical creams and ointments, and/or hospitalization.

Oral thrush is treated most of the time with oral medication as well because yeast infection that occurs in the mouth may also affect the rest of the digestive tract.

Genital yeast infection may be treated with topical ointments and creams. However, you should not hesitate to consult your physician when you experience bleeding or severe discomfort especially during urination.

Special attention (hospitalization) needs to be give to patients with systematic yeast infection. Oral and genital yeast infections, when left untreated, may develop into systematic yeast infections in the long run.
