There’s a very close link between today’s usage of antibiotics and yeast infection. Yeast infection used to be a rare occurrence before we started tampering with our body’s immune system by using antibiotics. It’s true that antibiotics have been vital in treating severe respiratory and urinary tract infections. However, through the years, we’ve discovered that using too much antibiotics can actually cause yeast infection.

Yeast infection occurs when there is a significant imbalance in our body’s natural flora. In simpler terms, every healthy body has its own share or population of good fungi and bacteria. When either the bacteria or the fungi are depleted, one of the flora species becomes intrusive, thereby causing severe infection. In other words, when you kill off the good bacteria in your body, you eventually cause the fungi to take over your system. This causes the white patches/growth in your mouth and/or genitalia, which can infect your entire system. When not treated right away, ordinary genital and/or oral yeast infection can be fatal. Antibiotics kill off all bacteria which is why overuse of antibiotic and yeast infection often go hand in hand.

What is the treatment for mild yeast infection?

Mild oral and/or genital yeast infection may be treated with oral medication (Nystatin tablets) and/or topical anti-fungal solutions. The topical solutions may be bought over-the-counter, although nystatin tablets need to be prescribed. Take note though that it’s still advisable for you to consult your physician before undergoing any treatment. These treatments have side effects, which may be severe or mild, depending on the condition of your body.

How can systematic yeast infection be treated?

If your yeast infection progresses to the systematic level (it has entered your blood stream and is now affecting your whole body), you will need to be hospitalized. Systematic yeast infection may be fatal when not treated correctly. This type of yeast infection is common in people with extremely weak immune systems like leukemia or HIV patients.

The use of antibiotics and yeast infection risk is something to consider although in most cases you are fine to take your antibiotics as directed by your doctor.
